Anna’s work is earnestly sardonic, addressing the banality of everyday experience. These are not cruel mockings of the human condition; surprisingly they deploy a self-deprecating humor which not only contains the ability to project oneself but also allow a genuine appreciation for others. Alternating tones of optimism, despair, and humor blend to produce extraordinary experiences within the ordinary. Anna makes drawings as a way of recording time, and they are the basis of every project she undertakes. Whether the final form is an animation, book, painting or sculpture, at the heart of every project is an absurdist alchemy that stretches and ruptures the boundaries of reality, untangling the dilemma of our existence.

 

Bio:

Anna Hegarty is an artist and illustrator currently based in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and received a BFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis. Her work employs humor and absurdity to explore interpersonal relationships and the oddity of being a human in the world.
